How Did Native Americans & Pilgrims Take Care of Their Teeth?

native-americans-pilgrims-1
As Thanksgiving nears, so too does the opportunity for biscuits, pies, and ciders. While we take the time to give thanks for family, friends, and stuffing, we should also give thanks to the Native Americans who helped the Pilgrims improve their oral hygiene. Of course, we should also give thanks for modern dental advancements and dental education. After all, without our teeth, we could not enjoy all of the wonderful foods we share with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day.

When the Pilgrims set sail for the Americas, they brought with them poor oral hygiene habits. When traveling to the Americas, pilgrims survived on dried meats, dried fruits, beer, and old-fashioned biscuits, (probably not as tasty as they sound). The pilgrims did not pay very close attention to the condition of their teeth, nor did they pay very close attention to the way that their diet negatively affected the condition of their teeth.

On the other hand, the Native Americans had better diets and exemplary techniques for cleaning their teeth. Most Native Americans survived on crops like corn, gathering nuts and berries, and also hunting for food. The opportunity for fresh organic food undoubtedly contributed to better oral hygiene than the pilgrims had. Furthermore, Native Americans were amazingly conscious of the need to proactively clean their teeth to keep them healthy. For instance, Native Americans developed their version of toothpaste. They used herbs like Tarragon and the Cucacua plant to create a paste similar to our modern day toothpaste. Toothbrushes did not get introduced to the United States until the year 1885, but Native Americans used pine needles and even coarse animal hair tied around sticks and twigs to create a tool similar to the toothbrush.

It’s a fun thought to consider what the Native Americans and Pilgrims of the early Americas would have thought about mint or bubblegum flavored toothpaste, spinning toothbrushes, and teeth whitening mouthwash. While we enjoy our pumpkin pie this holiday, we should remember the technologies that the Native Americans introduced to the pilgrims, which undoubtedly contributed to cleaner teeth and a better quality of life. We should also give thanks to our dentists and dental hygienists of today because we no longer have to use pine needles and sticks to clean our teeth, and we can enjoy our pumpkin pie and cider guilt-free. Well, we can enjoy those things guilt free as they relate to our teeth at least.

Dustin from Netflix’s Stranger Things: Our Confidence Inspiration

Although we get braces and Invisalign to correct our crooked teeth, some find a reason to smile with no teeth. With the release of Netflix’s original show Stranger Things we’ve learned that there’s no reason to restrict your smile.

Actor Gaten Matarazzo portrays Dustin Henderson, our favorite 4th grader and sweet treats enthusiast, who fights alongside his best buds to save their friend Mike from monsters unknown. While Dustin wins us over throughout the season with his fierce loyalty and extensive Dungeons & Dragons knowledge, his toothless grin is what really melts hearts. The teen’s natural charisma is off the charts. His toothlessness only fuels his adorable goofiness.

Matarazzo’s real life condition is called cleidocranial dysplasia. This rare condition is hereditary and in some cases causes dental abnormalities like late-stage loss of baby teeth and slow emergence of secondary teeth. After Matarazzo was cast, the creators (the Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross) were quick to write Dustin’s incisor teeth out of the show. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Matarazzo shared how fans with cleidocranial dysplasia have found inspiration in Dustin. “They say that because this was in the show this is the first time they’ve heard of it outside the doctor’s office, it made them feel really good and it inspired them.”

Those with cleidocranial dysplasia aren’t the only ones finding inspiration in Matarazzo’s confidence. The fan favorite makes audiences members of all ages and teeth-counts smile uncontrollably.

Matarazzo occasionally rocks dentures at red carpet events and in his day-to-day but his overall confidence, no matter the dental situation, is what people from all walks of life truly admire.

First Impressions are Everything

How Important are They?

According to studies, people with straight teeth are perceived more likely to be successful, happy and maybe even second date worthy.

Invisalign published a cool infographic and reports that people with straight teeth are described as 68% happy while those with crooked teeth are described as 56% happy. People with straight teeth are also reported to have a 58% better chance of getting a job.

Advance Orthodontics understands that confidence is key and our practice offers traditional braces and Invisalign to help you get the smile you wish!

Rainbow Grilled Cheese, Yum or Yuk?

Have you ever seen a rainbow and thought “that looks delicious?” Restaurant owners in Hong Kong are hoping you have. Kala Toast, the latest internet food sensation, is a grilled cheese sandwich with a twist: the cheese is a flowing mass of rainbow awesomeness. There is absolutely nothing wrong with either grilled cheese sandwiches or rainbows, but are the two meant to be together?

@hkfoodiexblogger / instagram.com

In order to achieve the desired rainbow effect the cheese is mixed with various colorful ingredients which means that every cheese will have a slightly different taste. The purple cheese is mixed with lavender, the green is mixed with basil, and tomatoes are used to create the red cheese. Basil and tomatoes are a flavor combination as old as time but consuming lavender has probably not crossed anyone’s mind in the history of culinary culture.

The Kala toast has certainly received mixed reviews. While everyone likes the aesthetic appeal of eating a rainbow, the flavor itself has been seen as off putting for many. With all of the popularity that this sandwich has garnered through viral videos and blog posts, it will without a doubt be made somewhere near you in the not too distant future.

The important question is, when you see that culinary rainbow, are you going to try it?

The Dangerous Trend of DIY Orthodontics

A college undergrad struggling with money and access to a 3D printer took matters into his own hands to correct his teeth.

plasticaligner

You might have seen around the web a story about a guy who printed his own 3D plastic aligners to fix his crooked teeth. “I wasn’t smiling, and it was because I was unhappy with my teeth,” Amos Dudley wrote on his blog. He took a mold of his teeth with “some cheap alginate powder” and a 3D printed impression tray to see what his teeth were really like and realized that his print was very similar to the product Invisalign. He saw that he could essentially get all the materials he needed to print his own aligners with the help of some orthodontic textbooks. But not after some extensive research, according to his blog post.

Just, How Exactly Safe and Wise is This?

The answer to DIY aligners (and braces too) is NO! DIY aligners and braces can go horribly wrong! It is a dangerous trend and can do serious damage to your teeth and gums. Public warnings have been published by the American Association of Orthodontists. All orthodontic treatment should be done by an orthodontist.

Keep in mind: He had access to a 3D printer, other software, and labs through the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

In this case, he was lucky to have access to such software and that nothing serious happened to his teeth during his process. Not everyone has access to a 3D printer and considering the cost – it may be more expensive to acquire one, work on DIY aligners and hope to get it right than to just see your preferred orthodontist.

Leave the Orthodontic Care to Us

Advance Orthodontics offers Invisalign treatments and braces too – with all types of payment plans for patients. It’s not always the case that plastic aligners will do all the fixing, you will need expert opinion on how to best correct that smile!

Dudley has said that he will not make braces/aligners/retainers for anyone. He is a designer, not a manufacturer or an orthodontist.

Michigan Puppy with Braces is Breaking the Internet!

Cute Wesley is breaking the internet with so much cuteness!

This puppy created quite a stir when pictures of his new smile were shared on Harborfront Hospital for Animals’ Facebook page earlier this week.

“Orthodontia in pets is normally not for aesthetic purposes, but because of health concerns. This is Wesley and he needed tooth alignment because he could not close his mouth completely, otherwise,” the animal hospital wrote.

Wesley’s owner Molly Moore noticed that his adult teeth were coming in wrong and worried her puppy was in pain to even eat. Her father is a specialist in veterinary dentistry and had the solution to Wesley’s pain!

Welcome to the braces community Wesley! You’ve got an adorably cute braceface!

The Truth About Tooth Obsession: USA vs. UK

obsessed with teeth

Tooth or False

It may not be the first thing you notice, but notice it you will. A bright white smile in perfect alignment sends a message: “I have my life together and you should too!” At least that’s what we’re sold. Pretty teeth equals a happy life, dinner dates, an amazing workout at the gym, endless social opportunities and no worries! Why ARE Americans so obsessed with teeth, and is this cultural adoration with the perfect smile unique to our country?

An Accent on Other Qualities?

On the other hand, British folks cop a rap for having anything but a gorgeous grin. Is there any truth to this? Asking a Brit to explain this myth can be quite entertaining. As they smile without showing even a mere hint of enamel, you might get a sincere answer but most likely a sarcastic one — like relying more on their sexy accents than straight teeth for curb appeal.

Getting Real

In America, the emphasis is on both color and alignment while avoiding the appearance of having dentures. The whiter, brighter and straighter, the better. For the British the “natural” look is sometimes preferred. Some equate this difference to conformity versus individualism; rigid versus free spirited. An interesting topic to chew on, one of the greatest cultural divides between Americans and Brits is indeed their different opinions and attitudes toward their teeth. All that being said, a smile is still universal and widely accepted in both locales!

History of Braces

When Were Braces Invented?

Most people know what conventional braces are and how they work. Braces help solve a large number of problems with misaligned teeth. New technologies and ideas have pushed orthodontics forward into forms such as Invisalign. Advance Orthodontics brings you a brief history of braces and Invisalign technology.

Ancient Attempts at Braces

The need for braces in order to correct dental problems has been obvious for a long time. There were attempts to implement devices and techniques similar to braces thousands of years ago in Egypt. The remains of ancient people show that some bands brands made of animal fibers on their teeth. Some cultures tried to use finger pressure to move teeth. Not much is known about the extent of these ancient devices, as they never came into widespread use.

The Bandeau

Dental_bracesThe 18th century saw the development of the first device that might be considered an ancestor of modern braces. This device was called a bandeau. It was a piece of metal arched into a horseshoe shape to match the curve of the teeth in the mouth. The bandeau was tied to the teeth to push them into alignment. It was developed by Pierre Fauchard in France.

The Emergence of Modern Braces and Orthodontics

What most people might identify as modern braces really first appeared in the 19th century. This is a time when many people in several different countries contributed to early orthodontics. This is the period where metal wires were finally used across the front of the teeth. Rubber bands were used to help restrict movement and apply pressure to realign the jaw or teeth. This was also the time when orthodontics started to coalesce into a cohesive science.

Braces Refined and Become Commonplace

The 20th century saw the refinement of braces developed in previous decades. New materials and techniques were used in order to create something that was affordable, more comfortable and less taxing to apply. Braces became so common, they were associated with part of a normal childhood experience. Braces were also refined to handle a variety of malalignment and other dental problems. Metal braces were the standard for the majority of the 20th century.

Taking a Different View of Braces

Zia Chishti was a student at Stanford University when he wore braces. He went through the traditional procedure for braces and ended by having to wear a plastic retainer. This plastic retainer made him take a different view of conventional metal braces. Chishti began to think that a wholly plastic and removable retainer-like device could do the same job as braces, and started the journey toward creating Invisalign.

The Development of Invisalign

320px-Invisalign_alignerChishti along with three partners ended up developing a method by which a series of plastic aligners would be used in a progression to straighten teeth. The aligners would be fitted to each person individually. The partners developed computer software to model teeth and connect with manufacturing equipment to create aligners. This became known as the Invisalign system and led to the founding of Align Technology. The Invisalign system was approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998. Invisalign is incredibly popular today because the aligners are nearly invisible, comfortable and removable.
